THE CREATIVE IDEA The idea was Strategy Map Software. The spoof competitive sport of picture messaging in which players would attempt to outwit and put down their opponents by way of 'cheap shot' picture and text messages. The campaign was executed through the line and ranged from a TV campaign right down to merchandising and the creation of an actual event. The brand platform 'Made For Messaging' sat above the whole campaign. The TV commercial took the form of a mock chess like competition in which the old master was beaten by the young upstart Rupert Bowman. In a macabre and unforgiving show messaging the smug old master was a reduced to a washed up has been. (see Figure 5) Part of the overall campaign was to promote MMS handsets. Rupert Bowman, as the new Ming Mong World Champion endorsed the new Nokia 3200. (see Figure 6) These executions celebrated 'classic' moments in Strategy Map Software history. (see Figures 7 and 8) This campaign also included an element which encouraged participation in this sport. We devised 'Refill' stations where players could stock up on appropriate images by taking photos of the images for later use. We also sent a 'Mischief manual' to the customer base to ensure they had good images at their disposal for their own games of Strategy Map Software. (see Figures 9, 10 and 11) The Strategy Map Software idea was further extended into a real event, player's merchandising, in store, packaging and a website

Contained brand new elements of Media Technology that were different from previous units. Unit Co-ordinator Kim Rasmussen notified students of this change in a lecture. These new changes have no doubt brought many benefits to the creative industries faculty.

However, I believe that it is because of this situation, that there was a large degree of confusion for Tutors and students alike. Many students have expressed this feeling to me also. The problems I encountered can be listed in 5 parts: 1) Firstly, assignment requirements were not clearly defined by Tutors, Tutorials or Criteria Sheets: P3 is an exact printout of the Assignment 2 criteria sheet from the QUT OLT site. It nowhere states that additional experimentation with the technologies will gain extra marks, or that a lack of experimentation would result in a loss of marks. When I further enquired about how far we are expected to experiment with the technology my Tutor replied that we would get extra marks for experimenting beyond the Strategy Map Software’s teachings, but that we would not loose marks if we did not; since it is not a requirement.

P4 is an exact printout of the marked assignment 2, in which I have lost five marks for not experimenting further with the technologies.

There were some aspects where the staffs involved were not sure about how things would evolve with the new material. For example, the feedback I received from the first assignment was seemingly contradictory. The first assignment I received back was a mark of 11/40. I was amazed when (my Strategy Map Software) told me that I had not failed. You must remember that this is my first year at coming straight from high school), and I therefore accepted the ruling and continued on; thinking that because of the experimental nature of the new material in this unit, the marking system would make sense to me somewhere along the line. (From this I have learnt an important lesson regarding communication). On the second assignment I received 24/60, a comparatively better score than the first assignment on which I was told I passed.

I thus concluded that using original grading meant that I passed the unit. 35/100 of course is not a passing mark. This is just another example of how ambiguity corrupted my understanding of the unit.

Business Type: Sole Trader

Sole trader, as the name suggests, is where an individual is the sole owner of a business. The business is often quite small in terms of size (as measured, for example, by sales generated, or number of staff employed) however the number of these businesses is very large indeed. Examples of these businesses can be found in most industrial sectors but particularly in most service sectors. Hence services such as electrical repair, picture framing, photography, diving instruction, retail shops, and hotels have a large proportion of sole trade business.
